Our Words Can Be Pro-Life

Words build worlds. Remember the childhood adage “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me?” Although it’s helpful in bolstering a child’s self-esteem, it’s rarely ever true. We all have memories of how an ill-placed word cut deep into our heart, or how somebody’s glowing praise made us feel on top of the world. We may hate to admit it, but the language we use to express ourselves really matters and can make a difference!

Caring Network is a pro-life organization comprised of six DuPage County pregnancy resource centers. We know how much the language we use can affect not only our personal lives, but also our workplace and the lives of the women we serve. Reach out to learn more about what we do and how to get involved!

The Power of Language

While we don’t have time for an in-depth study of how Jesus connected with people through His use of language, it’s important to note that He took care to meet with people on their level. He spoke into the very depths of their being to build them up and draw them to Him. While He did call people out, His words were flavored with the very essence of love and His stories were gentle. Jesus illustrates the power of the language we use and how as people called by Him, our words should be full of life.

Proverbs 18:21 reminds us: “The tongue has the power of life and death. Those who love it will eat its fruit.” May we remember not to eat the fruit of death but bear the fruit of the Spirit.

How Can Our Words Be Pro-Life?

We’ve taken a quick glance at how our words have power. So, how do we put this power into action in a way that values life as God does?

Watch how we talk:

Whether in a public or private setting, we should be cognizant of how we’re expressing ourselves. If we want to be banners for life, we must uphold life by our speech.

Ephesians 5:4 reminds us: “Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.”

Speak well of others:

As followers of Jesus we should be careful to make sure our language sets an example of love and showcases who He is. This means our words are not judgmental and our language doesn’t make light of or put down others’ situations or personhood. We honor and respect others by our speech—pro-life means we don’t wish for anybody to perish and our words showcase that!

James 4:11-12 says: “Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?”

Value life with our voice:

Whenever possible we should stand up for the rights of the oppressed, voiceless, and vulnerable. In our line of work this particularly means using our voice for women and their unborn children.

Proverbs 31:8-9 illustrates this perfectly: “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

We Will All Account For Our Words

Jesus places so much importance on the words we speak. The One who created the tongue knows how much power for either good or evil it has. And, as His children, we are mandated to use it for good.

Matthew 12:26-27 should offer us some perspective on how we use our language: “‘I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.’”

If you’d like to use your voice to build others up and stand for life, we’d love to connect with you! We have many ways for you, your family, or your church to get involved through prayer, volunteering, or through other avenues!
