What is Chemical Abortion?

Is it really that bad? Mainstream news sources, the FDA, and society, in general, would have you believe, it is actually a good option and something to be celebrated. But, just like other methods of abortion, chemical abortion is still abortion, which ends the life of a human being, and there are dangers inherent in it that the general public may not be aware of.

Chemical abortion typically consists of two sets of pills. The first, mifepristone, halts the growth of the baby by blocking  essential nutrients from reaching him or her. The second pill, misoprostol, is then typically taken 24-48 hours after mifepristone and induces contractions to expel the baby from the uterus.

Is Chemical Abortion Dangerous?

Recently the FDA  lifted restrictions on women ordering chemical abortions through the mail. The lifting of restrictions was temporary at first due to COVID-19. But it has now become an official, permanent method to terminate a pregnancy. While the FDA maintains that chemical abortion is not hazardous to women, there are potentially dangerous complications that can be fatal.

Chemical abortion is only FDA-approved up to ten weeks in a woman’s pregnancy. However, if she is no longer required to visit a doctor and is able to order a chemical abortion via phone or internet, which is the case in Illinois, there can be miscalculations regarding the stage of pregnancy, which significantly increases the risk of complications.

Chemical pregnancy can result in severe bleeding, cramps, and even an incomplete abortion. And it can even be life-threatening for women with an undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy.

New Rules and Regulations

According to the Charlotte Lozier Institute, there are heavily peer-reviewed studies showing the dangers of chemical abortion and the potential complications that can occur. The studies make connections between chemical abortion and a surge in ER visits based on collected data. The FDA’s decision, then, is based only on deaths caused by chemical abortion and not all of the combined potential complications.

Pro-Life Alternatives to Chemical Abortion

Of course, as a pro-life organization, we thrive in pro-life alternatives to abortion! We strive to be a place where women can be heard, encouraged, and empowered to choose life for their babies. We do this through offering support, providing resources and referrals, and having programs that assist mothers in whatever capacity they might need. We have partnerships with adoption agencies and material goods programs that provide assistance for women who choose to parent. We believe no woman should feel like abortion is her only option, or that she must choose abortion. We want to offer the avenues of life as the best way forward for her and her baby.

Being informed about the different aspects of abortion is important. And so is responding in love to those who have had an abortion or are in the process of deciding what to do. Find out today how you can get involved in caring for women who are unexpectedly pregnant. We have so many ways you can partner with us through prayergivingvolunteering, or working with us!
