Hospitality is Pro-Life

Last week we talked about how hospitality extends beyond the home and, more than anything is about welcoming others into our hearts. When we have the heart of Christ, we have a heart for people. Since hospitality is a way to demonstrate care for others, how does it exemplify pro-life values?

Caring Network is a non-profit organization with six first-step pregnancy clinics serving women across the western suburbs of Chicago, Illinois We have been welcoming women facing unplanned pregnancies since 1981 and continue to walk alongside them. By offering free services and compassionate support, we reflect the love of Christ and offer hope for their children.

Does Hospitality Really Make a Difference?

Think back to a time you felt welcomed by another person. Maybe this person greeted you with open arms and gave you space to be yourself. They might have lent a listening ear, words of encouragement, or a steady hand to remind you that you’re not alone. How did it feel to know you were cared for and valued?

Throughout life, we might go through circumstances and situations which make us feel isolated from others. We may be worried no one will understand, accept, or be there for us when things get difficult. However, having a supportive person who can listen, help, or just be present can make all the difference. Kindhearted hugs and uplifting encouragement are balms of healing and can be a bridge from death to life.

Hospitality is a Life or Death Necessity

As followers of Christ, being pro-life is valuing all life, from womb to tomb. At Caring Network, our focus is more specifically on life in the womb, but also the lives of the mothers and fathers we serve. So, how does the practice of hospitality extend to the areas we find ourselves within our organization?

Studies have shown that women, when faced with an unexpected pregnancy, are often afraid of the stigma, judgment, and lack of support they may face (especially from those closest to them), This assumed lack of supportive, nonjudgmental community may influence her to have an abortion rather than to choose life. When a woman feels like she will be labeled, shamed, or isolated in her pregnancy and motherhood, the supposed ‘quick and secret fix’ of abortion becomes more desirable. She can continue having her social circle and not have to worry about whether or not she will receive the support she needs. We know the pain and destruction abortion causes. That’s why support and hospitality are so important.  Studies show that if a woman does have the support she needs and feels she will be accepted by others, she is far more likely to make a decision for Life.

Hospitality at Work

What does this mean for the line of work that we do, and how you be part of it?

Having a non-judgmental space for women to tell their stories and get support is essential to the fight for life.

  • Offering resources, information, and person-to-person interaction helps show women that they matter and they are not alone.
  • Programming that intentionally connects women to their community provides somebody to walk alongside them.

We take this Biblical mandate of hospitality seriously, knowing that just having somebody to talk to—having somebody who roots for you and supports you—can save lives.

Caring Network cannot continue in this ministry of hospitality on our own. We need supporters and volunteers to practice hospitality in partnership with us! If you are interested in being on mission in this field, there are a variety of ways you can get involved! We have opportunities for prayer partners , volunteers in our offices, as well as other areas of support .
