Lydia’s Story
“Lydia” came to Caring Network for a pregnancy test. She had had a difficult childhood, but was now in college and working toward a more positive future. As soon as she learned that she was pregnant, Lydia felt that abortion was her only answer.
When her pregnancy consultant asked about Lydia’s spiritual and moral beliefs, she answered that she believed in God and that abortion was wrong, but now those beliefs were being tested. “It’s different being in this situation,” she said. Then Lydia had an ultrasound. She cried as she saw her baby moving, and heard the heartbeat. Her Caring Network nurse offered Lydia a picture to take home, but she declined at first. Her consultant discussed Lydia’s options, including adoption and the resources available to her. Before she left, Lydia asked for the picture of her baby. The next day her Caring Network pegnancy consultant followed up. Lydia told her, “After seeing the ultrasound, I cannot kill an innocent baby for the mistakes I have made.” She is now making an adoption plan and is relieved that she did not choose abortion.
