Pro-Life Matters: Teaching Your Kids

Before I fully understood the pro-life movement, I was trekking half a mile on an early June morning with hundreds of others in support of our local pregnancy center. Every year, my parents asked our church to help them raise funds for the walk. My family firmly believed in supporting the pregnancy center as it worked to help women choose life. It was from this annual hike that I learned the importance of taking an active stand for life.

Through the partnerships of individuals and churches in our community, Caring Network has helped thousands of women choose life through our pregnancy resource services.  From volunteer opportunities, to community events, there are multiple ways for people of all ages to get involved in the work we do.  Find out more about serving opportunities by emailing volunteer@caringnetwork.com.

The Impact of Example

From a very young age I was immensely impacted by my parents’ support of mothers and unborn babies. I knew we were part of something much bigger than just this particular event. I saw the dedication of those at the pregnancy center walk and felt the excitement of gathering with them to celebrate life. Although I was too young to know many of the difficult details involved in the pro-life fight, I still knew that we were supporting a serious issue.

How to Begin Teaching your Kids About Pro-Life Matters

Education: It’s never too early to start talking to your kids about the importance of standing for life. Even when they are young, there are ways that you can teach them about the sanctity of life without broaching subjects too heavy for their age. For example, you can show them pictures of their own ultrasounds, discussing prenatal development. Explain the growth of children in the womb, emphasizing the fact that they were able to move and respond even before they were born. You can include Bible verses and stories that talk about children in the womb, such as Psalm 139:13-14 or Luke 2:39-44.

Involvement:   Don’t be afraid to get them involved! Children of all ages can learn the importance and value of standing for life by participating in fundraising events, donating items to a local pregnancy center, or even just praying for mothers and babies. If you live in the Chicagoland area, volunteering with Caring Network through praying for clients, hosting a diaper drive, participating in Coins for Caring Network, or attending an upcoming event are a few good places to start.  Our young children are the next generation in this movement. Let’s all take pride in training them to stand for and defend life. Someday, I want to follow in my parents’ footsteps and take my own children to a walk for life. I hope to see you there!

Caring Network has been promoting the value of life in DuPage County and surrounding areas since 1981.  By providing free services such as pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, and options information, we are able to support women who are facing unexpected pregnancies.  We would not be able to do this work without the prayers, partnership, and volunteer efforts of those in our community.
