How Do Pro-Life Organizations Compete Online?
Wall Street Journal recently released an article describing the manipulation of algorithms by Google in favor of certain websites. As a result, larger corporations or organizations are reaping the benefit—including pro-abortion organizations such as Planned Parenthood.
In this ever-changing digital world, where we are constantly competing for the attention of our potential clients or supporters, how does a pro-life organization seek to maintain virtual relevancy?
Caring Network is a pro-life ministry in DuPage County, Illinois, providing free services and compassionate support for women facing an unexpected pregnancy. With six pregnancy resource centers spread throughout Chicagoland, our goal is to reach women where they are at, in their exact time of need. Join in our work through prayer, volunteering, or partnering with us to save lives.
The Current Reality of the Online Competition
Although Google has always maintained a lack of personal bias, the new study in the Wall Street Journal begs to differ. In a search for “abortion,” the Google results pointed to Planned Parenthood time and time again. According to an article by Life News regarding the study, “In July and August, WSJ journalists typed the word “abortion” into Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo and other search engines. Comparing the organic search results on the first page, Planned Parenthood’s main website made up 39 percent of all results on Google, 14 percent on Bing and 16 percent on DuckDuckGo, the report states.”
Pro-life pregnancy resource centers and organization such as Caring Network are the ones who are impacted the most. By favoring Planned Parenthood results over other clinics or centers, potential clients are not provided with options for their unexpected pregnancies. By attempting to be “pro-choice,” they are eliminating choices from women by not showing other search results and options for unexpected pregnancy services.
And, the reality is, Google is not going anywhere. Life News puts it this way, “According to the WSJ, there are about 3.8 million searches typed into Google every minute. It described Google as ‘the most highly trafficked website in the world, surpassing 90% of the market share for all search engines.’” Other engines don’t even scratch the surface of Google’s use. Pregnancy centers and pro-life organizations are truly at the mercy of Google, since they control so much of the industry share.
Online Competition: How to Make a Positive Impact?
So, what can pro-life organizations do in response?
- Raise awareness. It’s important to have conversations like these. Reading this blog is a great first step! Stay informed about the industry trends, and share the news with your friends, family, and church.
- Pray for your local pregnancy centers and pro-life ministries. Since Google controls so much of the search engine activity, it’s easy to feel at its mercy. However, as believers, we know that God is ultimately in control. He is able to get abortion-alternative information in front of women facing unexpected pregnancies, right when they need it. Join with us in interceding for this need.
- Volunteer your expertise. If you have a background in SEO, pay-per-click campaigns, or web optimization, volunteer your skills with your local pregnancy resource center or pro-life organizations. Non-profit ministries can always use the additional support and expertise. We can’t do this work without you!
Caring Network operates six pregnancy resource centers and a post-abortion support program in the western suburbs of Chicago. We are thankful for our supporters, volunteers, and prayer warriors who have come alongside our work for the past 38 years.
